Technology Department Vision Statement

The vision for technology use in the New London School District is based upon the school district's strategic plan and the district's overall mission of "Educating for Life." With the knowledge that the world we live in has rapidly evolved into an information-based society, we believe the use of technology should be an integral part of contemporary education. We see technology playing an ever-increasing role in our efforts to provide a quality educational program; improve efficiency and effectiveness in administrative functions; and strengthen communication within our school community.

We believe a quality information technology system supports learning by:

  • ‚ÄčEnhancing instruction, supporting and enriching curriculum, and aiding students in the achievement of the Connecticut Academic State Standards.

  • Creating technologically literate graduates prepared to meet the challenges and expectations of the global information-age society.

  • Encouraging life-long learning and enabling students to become independent learners, critical thinkers, and contributing citizens.

  • Facilitating the students' ability to access, analyze, synthesize and present information.

  • Fostering a positive orientation to the future, enabling students to handle new technologies and constant change.

  • Providing equitable educational opportunities for all students.

  • Offering on-going professional development to enhance the technological skills of staff, administration and the New London community.

We believe a quality information technology system provides administrative support by:

  • Providing access to information through our district-wide voice, video, and data network.

  • Supporting the efficient and effective operation and management of the district.

  • Strengthening communication with parents and our community.

  • Maintaining continuous attention and resources for technological growth.

  • Seeking out, evaluating, and incorporating new technologies where appropriate.

Technology in Our Schools

Our network runs on a 10 Gigabyte backbone. Most of the schools have upgraded to Cat 6 cable to maximize speed. Every classroom has access to a high speed wireless network to allow laptops and tablets to run smoothly- anywhere!

We use Cisco IP phones and have over 500 across the district. Our phone network is tied into the emergency response network so emergency responders are notified of exactly where calls are coming from, should a call be necessary.

Our district consists of Dell computer systems that are upgraded and maintained to run smoothly for teachers and students. In the 2015-16 school year we upgraded to Microsoft 365 which puts all important documents "in the cloud". This allows for important tools and documents to be accessed from anywhere there is internet.

EpsonEvery classroom is equipped with HoverCam document cameras and interactive Epson BrightLink projectors. HoverCams allow teachers to show small items or handouts on the projectors so every student has a good view. Newly renovated schools have speaker systems built into the classrooms so teachers can project their voice. Older schools use stand speakers to aid students who need help hearing.

Video

We have also implemented the use of one main video service since the 2013-14 school year. The Discover Video LogoDiscover Video service allows us to broadcast videos such as morning announcements, concerts, or graduation ceremonies throughout an entire school, the entire district, or even to the public. The video portal also acts as our own "YouTube", allowing staff members to upload and store video content. It is also tied into a few educational cable TV stations so teachers can show their classes current news events, etc. Many areas of the site require login credentials for the security of our students or licensed content. Staff members, please refer to your Technology Handbook for instructions on how to login.

The publicly accessible website is available at devos.newlondon.org, for more information about logging in view the Video Portal Page.
