On Wednesday, May 10th Students, Staff and a Board of Education member from New London Public Schools attended the 2nd Annual Dismantling Systemic Racism 2017 Conference on Race, Education & Success.  The Keynote Speaker Calvin Terrell kicked off the event with a galvanizing dialogue titled “Cowards to Warriors.” There were many  educational sessions that the participants attended, a few examples are, Embracing the Struggle: Effectively Building Relationships in High Schools, Educational Equity and School Climate – A Plan for Action, Just us or Justice, Empowering Communications Effective Inter-racial Dialogue to Build Positive School-Family Partnerships, etc.  One of the highlights of the conference was when Lunch Keynote Speaker, Aaron Jafferis, invited three students to the stage to recite poems. Two of the students were from New London, Melenik Nesmith and Mateo Velazquez. These courageous students brought the audience to their feet in applause with their inspiring poetry about racial equity.  The students and staff that attended this amazing conference will be able to share the insight and education they received with fellow colleagues and students throughout New London.
