It starts with a few very basic questions for any parent.
How and where do I find the best educational opportunities for my child? Which school district has the approach and commitment to students as individuals, where learning is personalized and focused on a child’s particular learning style?
The answer is New London Public Schools, the only all magnet school district in the State of Connecticut.
New London Public Schools are a system of high quality, academically rigorous schools that offer themed pathways to students from across southeastern Connecticut. Hundreds of students from 20 surrounding communities are currently enrolled in the district’s magnet schools.
“By pathways, we mean educational “themes” that are of interest to students and their families,” says Dr. Manuel J. Rivera, Superintendent of New London Public Schools. “Our thematic pathways are Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), the Arts, Leadership, Language and Culture.”
Each pathway, beginning in kindergarten and continuing through the 12th grade, uses a customized instructional approach that allows students to discover, develop and share their unique talents. This customized educational approach is especially effective for middle school students, particularly those who have chosen the STEM or Arts pathways.
“By promoting educational equity and academic excellence, New London Public Schools provides unique opportunities for all students,” says Kate McCoy, Director of Planning and Magnet School Development. “We provide a dynamic, culturally rich and diverse learning environment, where the focus is on success for each and every student.”
The application period is now underway and continues through April 8th. The district’s website, www.newlondon.org, can provide answers to any and all questions, and includes a new streamlined and user friendly application process. Families of prospective students can also contact New London Public Schools by calling 860.447.6000.
As a public school district, tuition is not charged for any student wishing to attend a New London magnet school. With $138 million in construction recently completed, and another $168 million approved for two new grades 6-12 campuses, the district is committed to academic and operational excellence.
“Our mission is to recruit top talent, which includes students, teachers, staff and administrators,” says Dr. Rivera. “Our collaboration with families and community partners is a source of pride, and we are gratified to be receiving so many inquiries regarding our magnet programming from parents across the region.”
