On Wednesday, March 16, the 3rd Annual Bee Magnet Showcase was held at Winthrop STEM Elementary Magnet School. Bee Magnet is a collaboration between New London Public Schools and LEARN that aims to educate the region’s families on their school choice options.
The event was extremely successful, with more than 27 families, community members and City officials signing in at the main table. Families from Killingly, Griswold, Stonington, Groton, Norwich, Niantic, Waterford and Montville attended the Bee Magnet Showcase, with many of them specifying that they were interested in nearly all of our magnet school options for children in grades Pre-K through grade 12.
Students in the choir at Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School sang three songs, and one of our community partners, NESS, also attended the event to talk to families about programming at Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School. Our culinary students at New London High School also decorated bee and flower-themed cookies for Bee Magnet attendees.
We are hopeful that Bee Magnet was a catalyst for families who haven’t yet applied to our magnet schools through the online lottery application system – as many were interested in and arranged for tours of our other schools!
