What is ESY (Extended School Year)?

  • ESY is provided only for those students who have an IEP and will be severely impacted by an extended break in instruction and meet ESY criteria.
  • ESY is special education and/or related services provided beyond the regular school year.
  • The need for ESY is discussed and determined at the annual review of the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP); based on the student’s performance data.  The PPT meeting is usually held at the annual review.  The duration, frequency, and type of service are determined by the PPT at no cost to the family.
  • The goal of ESY is to assist students with disabilities on IEP goals/objectives for:
    • Emerging Skills
    • Maintenance of Skills
    • Self – Sufficiency Skills

How Does the Planning and Placement Team determine is a student is eligible for ESY?

The following guidelines are used to determine the need for ESY.  When the answer to all questions within one area is “yes”, there is a strong indication what ESY services are warranted.

  • Emerging Skills
    • Does progress toward goals and objectives over an extended period show few if any gains?
    • Is the skill emerging?
    • Does documentation support the ESY services are needed to avoid irreparable loss of the learning opportunity?
  • Maintenance of a Skill
    • Do progress reports and data show that the student demonstrates periodic regression that is related to breaks in instruction throughout the school year?
    • Do progress reports and data show that the student regresses and cannot relearn the skills in a reasonable amount of time following the break?
    • Normal recoupment:
      • Does documentation support that without ESY services the student would regress to such an extent and have such limited recoupment ability that he/she would be able to benefit from his or her special education program?
  • Self-Sufficiency: Aquisition of a Critical Life Skill
    • Will failure to maintain acquired critical life skill(s) cause major or permanent loss of the skills and create a dependence on caregivers?
    • Without ESY services, would the student fail to maintain these critical life skills?
    • Additionally, the following questions will help in determining which goals are critical life skills:
      • “How many school years does the student have left?”
      • Is the skill required across a number of current environments?
      • Is the skill required in a number of future environments?

Planning and Preparation:

PPT/Case Manager will:

  • Identify IEP goals and objectives to be addressed during ESY programming.
  • Identify related service needs which may include speech, OT/PT and social skills instruction.
  • Ensure that all assistive technologies and equipment accompanies each student to the ESY program.
  • Register their students for ESY programming.  

Programming Includes:

  • ABA Resource
    • Students who require trail individualized instruction from ABA certified staff 
  • Learning Center
    • Students with learning and social/behavioral disabilities. 
  • Special Needs
    • Emphasis on maintaining present levels of performance in academic and social/behavioral goals & objectives. 
  • Multi – Disabled
    • Emphasis on meeting the needs of students with significant learning and physical disabilities 

Daily Programming:

  • Student transportation is provided to/from the ESY school locations.
  • Student’s daily programming will be determined by their ESY teacher.  All students will work on academic and social/behavior IEP goals and objectives in an effort to maintain their present levels of performance.
