New London Public Schools would like to congratulate Elizabeth Sked on winning the John McCormack Award: A CEA Award for Teaching Excellence!

Elizabeth was both a dual language and mainstream classroom teacher for 17 years before transitioning into her current role as an Instructional Coach at C.B. Jennings International Elementary Magnet. She knew from the very beginning that teaching was her calling and after 20 plus years in New London Public Schools, her passion is as strong as ever. Participating in a very competitive process, Elizabeth was the only winner in the entire state of Connecticut and will continue to represent New London Public Schools in the national competition later this year. “I am humbled by this honor and more importantly so proud to be part of the NLPS family. Now I will work hard and try my best to bring home the National Award for Teaching Excellence to NLPS.”

Over her 20 plus year career, Elizabeth has been involved in many projects and initiatives, most recently she has served on the district Professional Development and Evaluation Committee (PDEC) as both a member and co-facilitator.  As a Union leader she works collaboratively with all parties to support teaching and learning and is committed to engaging families in the education of their child. Every morning Elizabeth greets parents and students engaging them in conversation.  Elizabeth explains, “It is the informal moments like these that have enabled me to get to know more families and reach out directly to personally invite them to our events.”   She also supports new teachers through TEAM mentoring, TEAM paper reviewing and working directly with future teachers in field experiences.

The Connecticut Education Association (CEA) was formed in 1848 when 80 teachers met in Meriden. Their objective: organize teachers for the improvement of the profession and local public schools. The purpose of the John McCormack Award is to recognize and promote excellence in teaching and service to the profession.

Congratulations Elizabeth, we know you will make New London Public Schools proud at the national NEA competition later this year!
