New London High School is thrilled to welcome home Johnny Burns as the Head Football Coach.

A 1995 graduate of NLHS, and member of the 91’ and 92’ state championship football teams, Johnny has been around the gridiron for most of his life, has a passion for the game, and more importantly the kids that play the game.

Coach Burns earned a degree from Springfield College in Human Services and has worked for child protection for the State of Connecticut for over a decade.  While working within social services, Johnny served as a coach and president of the Southern New England Youth Football conference.  Under his leadership, he doubled the size of participation in the league and developed a highly competitive program that remains to date.
“Coach Burns brings a great deal of excitement to our program.  He understands kids, has a great work ethic, and is ready to take our program to the next level.  He is an individual that can motivate our kids on and off the field,” said Kasi Fletcher, New London High School Athletic Director.

Mr. Burns credits his foundation as a coach and mentor to the lessons he learned while in New London and is poised to give back to a community that has given so much to him.  New London High School Principal, Tommy Thompson, stated, “I am confident we have the right person to lead our Whalers.  Johnny is sincere, thoughtful, and will focus on every aspect of what it means to be a scholar-athlete at NLHS.”
